Pediatric Allergy and Asthma Unit

Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, Pediatric Allergy Department was founded in September 2004 by Prof. Dr. Fulya Tahan, who completed her Pediatric Allergy Sub-branch training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Pediatric Allergy Department. Allergy skin tests were performed starting in January 2005, respiratory function tests and plethysmography starting in November 2005, allergen immunotherapy starting in 2008, and food and drug provocation tests and exercise provocation tests starting in 2009. Pediatric sub-branch assistant training continues under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Fulya Tahan as a faculty member in the Pediatric Allergy and Asthma Unit. Dr. Mehmet Özkaya, Dr. Emre Özdamar, Dr. Zehra Bayazıt, Dr. Burcu Özge Erdoğan provide services in this branch. In our department, we provide education and patient services for the diagnosis and treatment of all allergic diseases, especially bronchial asthma (allergic and non-allergic), allergic rhinitis (allergic rhinitis), food, drug and skin allergies (atopic dermatitis, chronic urticaria, angioedema, hereditary angioedema, etc.) in children.

Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine started its education in 1969 as Hacettepe University Gevher Nesibe Faculty of Medicine within Hacettepe University in Ankara. Later, it was moved to Kayseri as Kayseri University Faculty of Medicine and its name was changed to Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in 1981. The Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Diseases started its activities in 2005 with faculty member Specialist Dr. Didem Behice Öztop. Currently, our Department, which provides outpatient polyclinic services, serves with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Demirci, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevgi Özmen, Assistant Professor Melike Kevser Gül and research assistants. In our Department, mental problems of babies, children and adolescents between the ages of 0-18 are evaluated and work is carried out in cooperation with families, teachers, schools and relevant institutions. Pediatric Cardiology is one of the first branches of science established within the Department of Pediatrics in 1986. It provides all kinds of services to pediatric heart patients from all over Turkey, especially from Kayseri and surrounding provinces, regarding pediatric heart diseases. The Department of Pediatric Cardiology has all the necessary infrastructure as of today. It provides services such as fetal echocardiography service for the baby in the womb and echocardiography, electrocardiography, effort test, tilde-table test, rhythm and blood pressure holter in the polyclinic for all children after birth.

If the disease is treatable without surgery in all pediatric patients in need, it can be treated with angiographic methods, and surgical procedures are also applied in necessary patients.

Non-surgical treatments, which are at the forefront of today's medicine, are performed as one of the leading centers in our country in this field. While these treatments can be performed in babies as small as 700 grams, adult patients are also served if an expert opinion is needed regarding congenital heart diseases.

Erciyes University Pediatric Chest Diseases Department was founded in 2009 by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Köse and has been serving Kayseri and surrounding provinces for approximately 15 years. Our Pediatric Chest Diseases Department performs diagnosis and treatment procedures related to childhood lung diseases. Cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, chronic cough (lasting longer than 4 weeks), congenital lung anomalies, premature lung diseases (bronchopulmonary dysplasia), bronchiolitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, pleural effusion, lung involvement of systemic diseases, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hemosiderosis, hydatid cyst disease, patients with tracheostomy and those using home mechanical ventilation devices are followed. Flexible bronchoscopy, which is used in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood lung diseases in our department, where the respiratory tract is evaluated with a camera system and samples are taken from the airways for diagnosis when necessary, is performed for all age groups.

It was opened on March 4, 2010. In the Pediatric Radiology unit within Mustafa Eraslan - Fevzi Mercan Child Health and Diseases, imaging protocols are adjusted for children and high quality imaging is obtained by giving the lowest possible dose. In addition, the portable features of these devices are specially designed for children. In particular, examinations can be performed in intensive care units and neonatal units at the patient's bedside. In addition, interventional examinations such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, and biopsy are performed with ultrasound guidance.

PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems): All examinations performed with this system are digitally archived, transmitted to the desired location and accessed online. In this way, computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging examinations performed on pediatric patients are also received by our center and evaluated.

Dr. Duran Arslan, Lecturer, was assigned to work in the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the end of 1994 by the decision of the department's academic board. Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Pediatric Gastroenterology Department started to provide outpatient clinic services on 01/01/1995. On this date, endoscopic procedures were started to be carried out with the facilities of the adult gastroenterology department. The Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology was officially established in 1996. In 1998, conventional pediatric endoscopy devices were purchased and a separate pediatric endoscopy unit was created. With the contribution of the anesthesia department in the pediatric endoscopy unit, patients began to be sedated during the procedure. After moving to Mustafa Eraslan Children's Hospital, our department acquired video endoscopy devices. It continued to work in a separate unit with 1 pediatric gastroscope, 1 neonatal gastroscope, 1 pediatric rectosgmoidoscope and 1 pediatric colonoscope.

Dr. Derya Altay joined the academic staff of the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology in 2018. The Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology continues its education and service activities as one of the leading centers of our country with its outpatient clinic and endoscopy unit.

In addition to diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures and 24-hour pH monitoring, interventional procedures such as endoscopic polypectomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), varicose band ligation, and foreign body removal from the gastrointestinal system can be performed in our department.

In our department, patient services are provided in outpatient clinics and inpatient services related to the fields of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Among the main diseases that are followed up, treated and monitored by our department; Malnutrition, digestive and absorption disorders, especially celiac disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), all kinds of acute and chronic liver diseases (acute hepatitis, chronic viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, liver diseases due to metabolic and genetic causes, Wilson's disease, etc.), pancreatic diseases, gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic abdominal pain, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, functional gastrointestinal diseases, gastrointestinal polyps.

The Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Pediatric Intensive Care Unit started to provide service in 2001 with a 6-bed room in the Infant Child ward. Later, in July 2003, it was moved to a new 9-bed capacity ward built in the name of Nazire and Mustafa Patıroğlu. Between 2001 and 2005, it continued its education and service activities by Dr. Hakan Poyrazoğlu, Dr. Tamer Güneş and Dr. Mustafa Akçakuş. Dr. Başak Nur Akyıldız, who joined the academic staff in 2005, completed her education in the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Unit and started working as a faculty member responsible for pediatric intensive care and continues her duty today.

Our unit provides service to patients who need advanced intensive care due to health problems that may occur in children between the ages of 1 month and 18 years old at the Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Mustafa Eraslan – Fevzi Mercan Children's Hospital. It is structured as a reference center where children with underlying specific diseases or multiple organ dysfunction or failure that concern multiple specialties are accepted and where the highest level of medical care and treatment can be provided.

In our country, it provides advanced level care to all pediatric patients who have undergone surgical operations, who have to live on a ventilator, who need intensive care for various reasons such as congenital heart diseases, intoxication, sepsis, shock, various traumas, foreign body aspiration, hemodialysis or plasmapheresis, and resistant convulsions. In addition to pediatric patients who are hospitalized in the wards and who apply to the pediatric emergency service, health services are also provided to pediatric patients in neighboring provinces and districts who need intensive care.

Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Department of Child Health and Diseases Nephrology was founded in 1979 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Enver Hasanoğlu. Prof. Dr. Ruhan Düşünsel made great contributions to the establishment and development of our center, where the first hemodialysis application was performed in 1980. Our department, strengthened by Professor Dr. Zübeyde Gündüz and Prof. Dr. Hakan Poyrazoğlu, provides education, research and patient care services with 3 faculty members.

Our department provides both outpatient and inpatient services for the

Congenital urinary tract abnormalities (hydronephrosis, reflux, etc.)

Our department has a peritoneal dialysis machine with instruments where peritoneal dialysis patients are treated and trained, and 24-hour intra-life blood pressure measurement (ABPM) devices used in diagnostic evaluation of hypertensive patients.

Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Hospitals Pediatric Emergency Service provides 24/7 service. There are two separate entrances: outpatient entrance and ambulance entrance.

Patient examination rooms are divided into 4 rooms: red area, red/yellow area, yellow area and green area. Outpatient patients first apply to the triage unit. After the preliminary assessment in the triage area, patients are directed to the secretariat to enter. Emergency patients who are within the scope of the Red area brought by 112 Emergency Health Services or their own means are not triaged and are taken to the CPR (Resuscitation) room immediately and necessary interventions are performed.

Patients who are admitted to the hospital and require follow-up and treatment are admitted to the appropriate rooms in the Emergency Pediatric General Service area according to their current disease and age group and their treatments are started by the relevant physician and nurse.

In the Emergency Pediatric General Service; There are Eleven (11) beds in total

In addition to the observation room, there is an Outpatient Treatment Unit with Nine (9) stretchers for the observation and treatment of patients who are planned to be followed up and treated for a short time.

The procedure of taking samples from patients and opening vascular access is carried out in the sample collection unit located in the pediatric emergency room.

Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatric Rheumatology was established as a separate department in 2011 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ruhan Düşünsel, Prof. Dr. Zübeyde Gündüz and Prof. Dr. Hakan Poyrazoğlu. It accepted its first students in 2013 with the sub-branch specialization exam.

We are currently working with a large staff consisting of Prof. Dr. Hakan Poyrazoğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşenur Paç Kısaarslan, Assistant Professor Sümeyra Özdemir Çiçek, subspecialty assistants and our rheumatology nurse Nermin Karabulut. Our patients are followed up and treated at the most modern and contemporary level with a multidisciplinary approach in pediatrics, physical therapy, orthopedics, psychiatry and dietician departments. The department provides intern, intern and assistant training. Our department has two outpatient clinic rooms, a patient preparation and intervention room, an ultrasound room and a meeting room.

  Our department has an ultrasound device for extremity evaluation and a capillaroscopy device for vascular evaluation.
  

In the Healthy Child Polyclinic of the Social Pediatrics Department, infant, child and adolescent health monitoring is carried out, and services are provided primarily on the following subjects;

- evaluation, monitoring and support of growth and development,
- breastfeeding consultancy,
- baby care and frequently encountered problems,
- screenings,
- nutrition in infants and children,
- eating and feeding problems,
- poor appetite,
- vaccination practices,
- sleep patterns,
- excessively crying / colic babies,
- toilet training,
- prevention of accidents and poisonings,
- frequently encountered behavioral problems in early childhood,
- guidance to families for the protection and development of child health.

Within the scope of child health monitoring, children's growth and development are basically monitored, families' findings and observations are evaluated, detailed examinations covering all systems are performed, childhood vaccines are administered, necessary plans are made regarding risky or pathological conditions, families are advised and counseled on the protection and development of child health.

In the Social Pediatrics Department Vaccination Room, childhood vaccinations are administered, and vaccination programs are planned and vaccinations are administered, especially for children in risk groups or those with special conditions (those receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy, those who have had or will have a bone marrow transplant or organ transplant, those whose spleens have been removed or will be removed, those using drugs that suppress the immune system, those with neurological problems, those who experience adverse effects after vaccination, those who missed the opportunity to be vaccinated, etc.). In addition, families are informed and counseled on issues such as childhood vaccinations, travel vaccination, adverse effects after vaccination and their management.
